About the scholarship

Our President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Max Lu, is living proof. Growing up in rural China, his life was transformed by two scholarships that gave him opportunities he could only dream of. Today, as a distinguished global academic leader, he embodies how education can unlock potential and shape the future.
Inspired by his journey, we are proud to launch the Professor GQ Max Lu Global Scholarship Programme, a commemorative initiative marking Professor Lu’s nine highly impactful years as Vice-Chancellor. Professor Lu will step down in May 2025, leaving behind a legacy of transformational leadership that has strengthened Surrey’s global vision and reputation, and its mission to improve access to education.
This scholarship programme will honour his legacy by creating life-changing opportunities for international undergraduate students from low-income families to follow a path to career success, just as he did. For these students, whose parents have never studied abroad, this scholarship represents more than an education - it is the key to a brighter future.
