The Littauer Fund
To celebrate Ernest and Deveda's generosity and dedication to the University of Surrey, The Littauer Fund has been established by their friends to allow others to support future Littauer Scholars at Surrey.
About Ernest and Deveda
Born in Mill Hill, North London, in 1936, Ernest’s family were originally from Germany. He was educated at Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School in Elstree, Hertfordshire, leaving in 1954. Ernest studied BSc Metallurgy and PhD Electro-Metallurgy at Battersea College of Technology (Surrey’s predecessor) in the 1950s and 60s.
Ernest’s time at Battersea was the catalyst for his highly successful career at US company Lockheed Martin, where he became Vice-President and General Manager of Missiles and Space Research.
Ernest and Deveda have long since been committed and faithful friends of the University of Surrey. Ernest was one of the founding members of the Friends of Surrey, established in the US to support teaching and research in a tax-efficient manner for US donors. On their trips to Europe, they would visit the University, join Battersea Reunions and take the opportunity to catch up with news from the School of Engineering.
When I had completed my bachelor's degree, I was offered the opportunity to stay on to do a PhD. But because I had graduated with first class honours, I also got an offer from Cambridge. And I got offers from all sorts of places. But I thought, “Why would I want to change?” I know this place. I like this place. I like the faculty; the faculty like me. Because they've supported me, I was able to graduate with honours. And I'm not moving. And that was...was the thought process of my whole career.Ernest Littauer
About the Littauer Fund
Ernest and Deveda generously supported students at Surrey for over twenty years and they wished their legacy to directly support future generations of students.
All contributions made to The Littauer Fund to celebrate Ernest and Deveda’s lives will fund future Littauer Scholars to ensure their memory truly lives on.
It’s exciting to know that your contribution is helping people. Targeted giving lets you see where your gift can make a difference, and Surrey does a very good job of finding something that is of interest to each donor, developing it and making it feel special.Ernest Littauer
