Without my placement I would not be where I am today: almost five years on and I still work at Broadmoor Hospital – I’m now a Senior Nurse (Clinical Team Leader). I am so glad I did a placement; it changed the course of my career for the better.

My placement completely set me up for my early career. I began working in a laboratory with skills beyond the level I was being trained at in my new job, and it gave me a head-start to carry out my own research to a high standard." 

I really enjoyed the choice you get with Sociology with the modules and the area of interest you want to specialise in. This also helped me decide what area of work I wanted to go into after graduating. 

The placement year was an opportunity to learn and develop a number of transferable skills including stakeholder management, analysis and reporting, as well as be able to experience and get a sense of a professional working environment.

I plan and create organic social media content for different clients such as Hard Rock Cafe, CarFest, and many more. It's a really fun job and I'm certain that the skills and knowledge I developed during my time at Surrey were a great contributor in securing it.

My course was delivered in such a way that felt encouraging for discussion and learning, offering seminar like lectures that enabled critical discussion at a reasonable pace for learning. I particularly enjoyed the plethora of external talks from industry experts offered as part of the many interesting and unique modules." 

The placements within sporting organisations were a fantastic springboard for future job prospects.

Don’t follow what everyone is doing and think that’s your path. It isn’t. Think deeply about what you want to become (the why), then work out what you need to make it happen (the how). Build your life on solid momentum and stop chasing big moments - if you do this well, the big moments will come.
