'The true standout for me has been the friends I made during my time here. Since Surrey attracts such a diverse student body, I enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life and made friendships that will last a lifetime!'

Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?

I chose to study the Sustainable Development MSc after completing my undergraduate degree in Biology and Marine Biology, because I was still exploring my career options and what my ideal role might be. This course allowed me to expand my scientific knowledge of sustainability while also enhancing my understanding of business and its practical applications in sustainability.

What really stood out to me about Surrey was its assessment method, which is entirely based on coursework instead of exams.

This appealed to me since I had very little experience with university exams as a Covid student! Additionally, the placement module caught my attention because it offers students the chance to gain real life experience in their field. Trying out a role can be really helpful in shaping your career path.

What are the best things about Surrey and your course?

One of the best things about Surrey were the interesting course topics and engaging lectures. The lecturers at the Centre for Environment and Sustainability (CES) were amazing, always ready to help with any questions and provide guidance on assessments. However, the true standout for me has been the friends I made during my time here. Since Surrey attracts such a diverse student body, I enjoyed meeting people from all walks of life and made friendships that will last a lifetime!

What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?

Life as a postgraduate student at Surrey was great. I loved the flexibility of the teaching schedule, the intense teaching weeks gave me the freedom to organise my own structured time to study around the modules. There’s a wide range of societies and sports to participate in, which is a great way to meet other students.

What are your career plans?

Currently, I work as the Sustainability Executive at World Sailing, where I engage with sustainability on a daily basis for our sports federation. This role has been a great way to immerse myself in the industry. I’ve jumped straight in to analysing data, calculating carbon footprints and mapped out key KPIs for us to track. As a sailor myself, it’s great to understand more about event sustainability and the initiatives we have in place. One project I’ve been leading is our Sustainability Sessions that educate our community about sustainability practices. I’ve really enjoyed bringing these sessions to life and seeing the positive feedback from our community.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?

Go for it! This course not only provides real life experiences in sustainability but also assesses you in a way that enhances your transferable skills for the business world. The intense module weeks are a great way to learn more about yourself, and develop a healthy routine around studies.

The department is super friendly, creating a sense of community throughout your journey at Surrey!
