I knew instantly at my GSA audition that I would be in an environment that encouraged me to experiment and grow as an actor, qualities essential for pursuing a BA course.

Graduation year

2024

Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

The prospect of gaining a year of practical experience at a top drama school was ideal, as I knew it would equip me with the knowledge, skills and confidence required for future training. Not only would a foundation prepare me for auditions and introduce me to a range of methods and techniques, I would also gain an invaluable insight into the demands of a 3-year intensive course. I knew instantly at my GSA audition that I would be in an environment that encouraged me to experiment and grow as an actor, qualities essential for pursuing a BA course.

What did you enjoy about it?

The creative freedom of the course. We were exposed to a range of workshops and projects throughout the year in which we were able to produce several pieces of our own work. These experiences led many of us to discover new areas of the creative process that interested us, giving us a taste of different paths we, as foundation students, could consider.

I also loved our Naturalism project. It introduced us to the detail and specificity of character work and encouraged us to find an individual process during rehearsals. It was the first opportunity we had to apply techniques taught in our skills lessons and it highlighted to me the progress I had made so far.

What support have you received at Surrey?

When applying for BA courses there was continuous support and guidance offered by our programme leader and many of our tutors. This ranged from practical audition prep, both in class and individually, to academic references and careers advice. There was always someone to go to!

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

This year has presented me with opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. GSA has a beautiful sense of community, felt instantly when joining the school, which has provided me with long lasting relationships and connections.

The substance of the course has reinforced my passion for acting and made me excited for the next phase of my training.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

Make the most of every opportunity! The best advice I received when starting this course was to always be the first person up in the space. Never feel embarrassed to commit when trying something new; it teaches you to “fail” and make mistakes, which is the best way to learn.
