We apply mathematical modelling together with computational and statistical techniques to a wide range of problems in the life and social sciences.

Our research

A mathematical model of a physical or biological system which concentrates on the essential components of the system allows us to experiment by varying parameters and making predictions, thus providing insight into the behaviour of complex systems that may not be possible any other way.

It requires a careful dialogue with colleagues from other disciplines to fully understand the problem and so to formulate the mathematical model correctly. The results obtained also have to be explained and interpreted in the context of the original problem.

Cellular systems and quantitative systems pharmacology

Considering both fundamental biological processes such as tissue development and cell signalling, and applications based research in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.

Epidemiology, ecology and population genetics

In recent years at Surrey, mathematicians have worked on some particularly novel projects in ecology, epidemiology and population genetics.

Mathematical criminology

Developing a range of agent-based and partial-differential equations-based models to analyse the qualitative behaviour of crime and combine with data.

Sleep and circadian rhythms

Using mathematical models at many different scales to help understand the structure of the complex biological rhythms of our bodies.
