"The single most important thing that came from my time at Surrey was that everyone I work with now came directly from, or through, the music connections we made at Surrey."

2012YOUR TIME AT SURREY
The off-kilter look and feel of Creative Music Technology (CMT) was what attracted me to Surrey –CMT was somewhere I felt my musical skills could be used, without having to tick the traditional box of musical performance. When I think of Surrey, I remember getting involved in the music scene and forming lifelong friends.
The best bit of the course was the freedom to explore different sides of my creativity and really expand my studio practice. The CMT lecturers really pushed me to experiment in my work and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone.
LIFE AFTER SURREY
After graduating, I set up a company called Sounds Like These alongside three CMT course mates. Eight years later, we’re still best friends and business partners. We get to make music together and support each other every day, just like we did at Surrey.
Career-wise, Surrey gave us a solid backdrop for what we wanted to do, and the Creating Music with Computers module specifically inspired us in our creative approach, which we still stick by today. The single most important thing that came from my time at Surrey was that everyone I work with now came directly from, or through, the music connections we made at Surrey.
What is your advice for students aspiring to work in your profession?
Go after what excites you. Employers can tell straight away if someone is applying for a role they’re not interested in. If you want to write music or create sound design for film or TV, start by downloading your favourite visuals from YouTube and re-scoring them.
People care about showreels not CVs, so don’t expect to get a response from anyone with a CV but no work to show! Your work doesn’t have to be commercially released, it just has to illustrate your skill and creativity, something that people simply can’t get from reading about you.
Make sure you know both Logic and Pro Tools inside out and you’ll be set for most jobs.
I’m forever grateful for the experience I had at Surrey and the connections I made, which will last a lifetime.
