"From a young age, I always loved problem-solving and technology and so I knew I wanted to go into Engineering. This followed into secondary school where I greatly enjoyed computing and physics but specifically the circuitry topics so Electronic Engineering seemed like the perfect fit."
Entry year
2020Why I chose Surrey
University of Surrey was always at the top of my list because of its league rankings in Electrical and Electronic Engineering but also for its broad selection of routes to specialise such as with Computer Systems, Space Systems and Nanotechnology.
In addition, visiting the campus during an open day helped solidify my decision as I really liked the campus facilities and how green Guildford is.
My course
One of my favourite aspects of my course is the wide variety of skills you have the opportunity to learn and develop. For example, prior to university I didn’t have much experience with coding but, with my course, I have been exposed to learning a number of coding languages.
I also enjoy the variety of modules offered as it covers a broad scope of the Electronic Engineering field. From digital communications and control engineering to robotics there are many opportunities to broaden your university experience.
The school of Electrical and Electronic Engineering has amazing laboratories for both practical and computing uses. There you have access to a number of components and equipment to help your study experience.
Help with my career
During the application process for my Professional Training Year, I was given weekly support sessions provided by placement tutors. These sessions offered CV and cover letter tips as well as talks from industry experts. I also had a one-to-one appointment with the Employability and Careers Centre for a CV check which was very useful.
I had a year-long Professional Training Placement as a Design and Verification intern at Analog Devices, Inc (ADI) in Newbury, UK. The key highlights of my placement are the number of professional skills and confidence gained as well as it unveiled a career path that I hadn’t previously considered.
"As a result of my placement year, I have accepted a graduate position at ADI in Verification."
My Surrey experience
I have been a member of the Surrey Dance Squad since my first year and I had a wonderful experience representing the university at a number of dance competitions.
While the campus and Surrey Sports Park are some of the best things about Surrey, the first is the people. I have had the pleasure of meeting kind and talented people with a variety of experiences.
Looking ahead
My time at Surrey, has helped to shape me into the person I am. I feel much more independent and confident in both academic and personal sense.
