Why I did a foundation year

I didn’t quite get the grades for the Psychology BSc but I knew I wanted to go to Surrey as it’s a great university, so the Psychology Foundation Year seemed like the best path for me. I knew that it was just an extra year of learning skills that would be crucial to the first year of the course.

Support at Surrey

The lecturers were extremely helpful from day one. I’d go to them about different assignments or just with general course questions; they always made time for me, whether it was during lunch or after lectures, so that they could support me. They also made an effort to get to know me straight away which made it easier to talk to them.

"Starting my course with friends I have known for a year, at a university where I already know my way around, is a blessing I didn’t know I wanted."

Highlights of my experience

The Foundation Year has made me much more confident academically and personally. The skills we were taught, including how to write essays and how to reference, have been a great help in the first year. On a personal level, already having friends going into Year 1 has meant that I feel supported if I ever struggle with assignments or any personal matters. Overall, I found it an incredibly enjoyable experience and very rewarding.

If you're thinking of doing a foundation year...

100% go for it. I remember thinking at the start that I just wanted to go straight into Year 1 but I am so glad that I didn’t. Looking back, I would have struggled with the workload and living independently. Starting my course with friends I have known for a year, at a university where I already know my way around, is a blessing I didn’t know I wanted. I wouldn’t have done a single thing differently.
