Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
With a passion for games and a background in psychology, I chose the MSc Psychology in Game Design and Digital Innovation as it was the next step to creating a career out of my two passions. Due to the University’s location – Guildford is a hub for game development and often referred to as the ‘Hollywood of Video Games’ – the course offers many unique opportunities to build a connection with local games companies. Combined with the specialised modules offered by the course exploring player motivations, game design principles and human-computer interaction, this helps to create a specialised skill set.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
The University is passionate about helping me develop my skills and pursue my dream career, as evidenced by the Games and Innovation Nexus, the many networking events that have been held, and the industry expert guest speakers. A lot of the assessments and course content focuses on applying theory to develop real-world skills, such as gamifying existing research to designing a new product based on interviews. The course develops practical skills which will be useful for a wide range of careers.
Another thing I love is the variety and diversity of people you meet wherever you go. The people are great, the campus is great – the whole experience is great!
What are your career plans?
I plan to get some work experience with a games company over the summer, create some games, and find a job that I love.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
Study hard and take your time. Deadlines can creep up quickly and it can take a while to get back into the flow of things, especially if you've had a gap between your undergraduate and postgraduate studies like I did. Change can take time to adjust to, but don't stress and if you get stuck contact your module or programme lead as they're there to help. All of the staff are very sweet and will be more than happy to help you.
