"The School of Law is one of the best communities to be part of: the staff are all so friendly, welcoming and supportive, it feels like a home away from home."

Describe your experience at Surrey in three words.

Transformative, enriching, unforgettable.

Why did you choose to come to Surrey?

The beautiful campus definitely was appealing; however, I didn’t actually see the campus in person until moving in weekend. I’m from a small British overseas territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, so I picked Surrey predominately on research as I was still on St Helena Island during this time.

During my research I noticed that Surrey offered a placement which definitely stood out for me, as I was keen to get additional industry experience. I also noticed it offered a different take on the traditional LLB Law course by providing a Politics, Philosophy and Law Pathway which sounded very interesting, as I had in interest in politics and philosophy. The course allows me to tailor my law degree to accommodate these other interests.

I had also known someone who attended Surrey who was also from St Helena, and they gave a great recommendation which solidified my decision to come to this university.

What was your first impression when you got here?

Stunning! The campus is very beautiful. Everyone was also so welcoming. It felt like a great community to be a part of: I had a gut feeling that this was the right choice for me.

Why are you passionate about your subject?

I’ve always had an interest in law. I completed legal work experience during GCSEs and college; I also studied law at A-Level. This confirmed my passion to pursue law as a career!

What do you like about your course and why?

I love learning from lecturers who have industry experience. They're practising solicitors or barristers, they've specialised in certain areas of law or they've conducted research. It's so interesting listening to their experiences first hand, whilst also learning the content of the course. It puts the information we are learning into a real-world context.

Tell us more about being a student ambassador

Since my first year I've been working as a student ambassador with the aim to increase my employability skills. The jobs are always varied and provide new experience. Most of all I love meeting new people and working with the lecturers and other students, especially when I am able to contribute to another young person’s life. It’s very rewarding and has definitely been a big part of my experience here at Surrey.

What are the best things about life at Surrey?

Some of the best things about life at Surrey would be the location and the people! The beautiful green campus is close to Guildford and London. One of Surrey's best attributes has to be the people. I’ve been lucky to meet people here who I would consider friends for life: it just makes university so much more enjoyable. Surrey has a great community, especially within each School. The School of Law is one of the best communities to be be part of: the staff are all so friendly, welcoming and supportive, it feels like a home away from home.

How has your time at Surrey had an impact on you?

I think in the time I've been at Surrey I've seen my character develop. I’m more confident and independent. I’ve learnt to stand by my decisions and opinions and take every opportunity that comes my way.
