I'm so glad I chose this programme after lots of research. The department really lives up to its reputation and everyone has been so helpful and supportive in helping me improve week-by-week. The course is really well thought out and comprehensive too, so you're well prepared as you develop your knowledge and skills. The rose tinted glasses are well and truly off now when I consume media!

University of Tuebingen, GermanyWhat do you like about your course and why?
There seems to be no better time than now to study our mediatised society -and I am so glad I chose this program after lots of research. The department really lives up to its reputation and everyone has been so helpful and supportive in helping me improve week-by-week. The course is really well thought out and comprehensive too, so you're well prepared as you develop your knowledge and skills. The rose tinted glasses are well and truly off now when I consume media!
But it's been a pleasant surprise to see how interdisciplinary Media and Communication can be, so you're never short on avenues to explore as it is a really collaborative and important field. I'm just sad I can't fit in all the optional modules!
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
As a campus university, I always feel well connected to Surrey Uni in a community sense. The facilities are great and you feel like you are a part of a university going from strength to strength. There are lots of beautiful places to unwind and relax, as well as so many different events to choose from, so I'm never stuck for something to do.
But whilst I have everything I need here, being located just 30 minutes from London with great connections means I've been able to explore the rest of the UK really easily too! But in short, it really feels like a home from home where I have been able to make new friends and really develop as a person.
Tell us more your study exchange abroad
I'm currently on a year-long Study Exchange abroad. I chose to study Media at the University of Tuebingen in the south of Germany because I was interested in their particular strength in film studies and journalism in the era of AI. Having been well-prepared at Surrey, I feel like I have hit the ground running here and it has been so exciting, both academically and socially. I can't recommend it enough to go on placement.
I could tell beforehand that the University makes a big effort to develop students academically and practically but I have been surprised just how easy they have made the whole process has been.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
As a mature student, coming to university has been a surprising and life changing turn of events for me. But as I have learned more and more, my eyes feel like they have been opened and I'm hooked on answering questions I have. Therefore, I'd like to go into research with further study, or perhaps try to inspire others by going into teaching.
What’s your advice to new students?
I think you will find on most metrics, Surrey's Media and Communications BSc (Hons) will come out very high, but whilst this might give you a lot of confidence, you really need to choose with your heart. If the course fascinates and inspires you to think of endless questions, like it did/does for me, then you will not only do well in this course but you will have fun doing so.
