Choosing Surrey

I chose to study this course at Surrey because of the University’s strong reputation in the field of food science. Access to advanced facilities and cutting-edge research was also a key factor for me, and I wanted to study in an environment where I could gain practical experience in food science technology and learn from experts.

Additionally, Surrey has a welcoming and supportive community, which was important to me as an international student, and I knew this would be a place where I could grow both academically and personally.

I really appreciate the balance between theoretical learning and practical application. I get to be hands-on in the laboratories, which is essential for building real-world skills. The lecturers are approachable and bring their research expertise directly to the classroom, making the content even more engaging. Life as a postgraduate student

The campus itself is beautiful and welcoming, with lots of green spaces and places to relax, which really helps when you need a break from studying. There are plenty of resources available, from the library to study spaces, making it easy to focus on your work.

The community is very welcoming, and I’ve found it easy to connect with other postgraduate students through social events and academic networks. The diversity of students here is another highlight – you meet people from all over the world, which adds to the overall experience. There’s also a strong support system in place for both academic and personal challenges, whether it’s through your department or the student support services.

Living so close to the town centre means you have access to everything you need, whether it’s restaurants, shops or cultural activities. Plus, the quick train ride to London is a huge advantage when you want to explore a bit more or need to attend professional events.

My career plans

I want to continue advancing in the field of food science. After completing my MSc, I aim to work in food research and development, where I can apply the skills and knowledge I’ve gained to create innovative, sustainable food products.

In the longer term, I’m considering pursuing a PhD in food science. I want to contribute to the development of healthier, more sustainable food solutions.

My advice

For students considering this course at Surrey, my advice is to approach it with curiosity and a passion for learning about the science behind food. This course is not just about theory; it offers a lot of hands-on experience, so being proactive in labs and making the most of the advanced facilities will really help you succeed. Stay open to exploring different areas within food science, as the course covers a wide range of topics, from food safety to nutrition and technology.

I would also suggest being prepared for independent study, as postgraduate life requires good time management and self-motivation. Don’t hesitate to engage with lecturers and peers, as the academic community here is very supportive and collaborative. It’s also helpful to think about your specific interests early on so you can tailor your projects and assignments in a way that benefits your future career goals.

Lastly, take advantage of all the support services and networking opportunities available, as they can really enhance your overall experience and open doors for your career.
