Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

Initially it was because I had done a BTEC alongside my A-levels. However when faced with the choice of coming to Surrey and doing a foundation year, or going to another university, I chose Surrey. I knew a foundation year would make me feel more confident about my choice of studying Law especially when I was previously planning to pursue a degree in science. Surrey was also ranked higher and is known for its graduate prospects. I knew that arguably more important than getting my degree was finding a job afterwards.

What did you enjoy about it?

The FASS staff were definitely the reason it was so enjoyable. I went in thinking that in university I would be invisible and that at this stage educators cared less. It was not the case at all! The support was always there. It was an incredibly good experience especially because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to pursue Law. After the Law module, I was completely sure that it was the degree for me.

What support have you received at Surrey?

Besides the general support always offered by the FASS staff, we are also given a personal tutor. They were definitely my main point of contact when it came to support.

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

It has made me more confident about my choice of degree. I feel more comfortable in the university environment, and it gave me the chance to consider my choices. There is no way for me to know, but perhaps the first year would’ve been too overwhelming for me, at that point of my life right after A-levels.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

Consider all your choices. A foundation would take longer but your path to a university degree doesn’t have to be the same as everyone else’s. Only your personal goals matter.
