Human Nutrition MScChoosing Surrey
I chose the University of Surrey because it is ranked among the top institutions for food science and nutrition. Its strong reputation for academic excellence and student satisfaction made it the ideal choice for advancing my education in a supportive environment.
My course
The best aspect of studying at Surrey is being taught by world-class experts who are leaders in their respective fields. The lecturers bring decades of research experience and deliver evidence-based knowledge that is current and impactful. The research-led curriculum ensures that students are being taught by those who are actively shaping the future of nutrition science. For example, learning from distinguished academics such as Professor Susan Lanham-New, who led the UK's efforts in defining vitamin D requirements during the Covid-19 pandemic, provides invaluable insights into how nutrition plays a critical role in public health.
Life at Surrey as a postgraduate student
The support provided by both the lecturers and the School of Biosciences is exceptional. The lecturers are not only easily approachable but genuinely supportive too. They actively encourage students to reach out if they face difficulties in understanding course material and foster a learning environment where critical thinking and idea-sharing are highly valued.
My personal tutor, Dr Adam Collins, went above and beyond in offering guidance, ensuring I had the support I needed to succeed academically and personally. Additionally, the wellbeing team is always available to assist students. If you're experiencing challenges that affect your ability to meet assignment deadlines, they provide the resources and flexibility needed to help you stay on track. This combination of academic and personal support ensures that students are well-equipped to navigate their studies effectively.
My career plans
As a registered dietitian in Nigeria and with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK, my goal is to work as a dietitian with the NHS for a couple of years. This experience will enhance my clinical expertise before I pursue a PhD and transition into academia, as becoming a lecturer has always been my dream. I am passionate about teaching and aspire to contribute to the personal and professional growth of young people by sharing knowledge and having a meaningful impact on their lives.
My advice
Pursuing a master’s in human nutrition at the University of Surrey is an experience that I wholeheartedly recommend. Make the most of every opportunity and tap into the vast wealth of knowledge that is readily available to you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions in class or seek clarification on any concerns – being proactive will help you get the most out of the course. Surround yourself with peers who share similar ambitions, as building a strong support network is crucial for success. While the journey may feel intense at times, by the end of the year, you will realise that every challenge was worth it, and the experience will be deeply rewarding.
