I really enjoyed using my Professional Training placement to not only gain an insight into working within the charity sector, but also to actually give back to my community.
Course
Sociology BSc (Hons)Entry year
2021What do you like about your course and why?
I think Sociology is a really important subject to study. It is consistently relevant to engage with as what we study adapts with society’s social, economical and cultural changes.
Sociology at Surrey is very research-oriented and I like that the work we complete mirrors contemporary research in the field.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I really love the safety and security of being on campus at Surrey. If you don’t know where a building is, someone is always willing to show you and it’s not usually more than 15 minutes away. I would always recommend joining a club or society in first year as it really brings out the best in you and gives you the opportunity to meet new people that you wouldn’t come across in your lectures or workshops.
Tell us about your Professional Training placement
I completed a Professional Training placement with a domestic abuse advice and advocacy service. I really enjoyed using my placement year to not only gain an insight into working within the charity sector, but also to actually give back to my community.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
At the moment, I'm not sure of what I want to do when I graduate.
There is so much that you can do with a Sociology degree but with its reputation for employment and careers services, I’m hopeful that Surrey will support me to find the best career path for my when the time comes.
What's your advice to new students?
Sociology is always changing. Keep up to date with the news and don’t be afraid to apply your knowledge of current affairs in class or your assignments. Your attention to the social world and creativity won’t go unnoticed.
