Advanced Clinical Practice MSc

Why I chose Surrey

As a Lead Heart Failure Specialist Nurse at Frimley Park Hospital, I strive to improve quality of life for my patients and ensure that I give them the highest standard of care. I’ve always been keen on progressing in nursing and started to think about ways I could work towards becoming an advanced practitioner, which led me to the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice course at Surrey.

I previously completed an independent/supplementary prescribing (V300) module at Surrey, so knew first-hand that the teaching was excellent, which was the main factor in my decision. The course is also well known within my trust, which is connected to Surrey. On top of that, the location of the campus suits me perfectly.

My course

The teaching on my course is relevant to my current role and it’s helped me identify my weaker attributes and build on these. I also get to choose optional modules to tailor my studies to my specific needs and interests.

My lecturers are all very knowledgeable and incredibly supportive, helping me achieve 88% in one of my assignments! The new facilities, including study spaces and computer laboratories, are also great.

My career and development

Being at Surrey has changed both my personal and professional outlook and it’s made me realise that I can study at masters level, despite not having a degree. I’ve gained confidence in my academic abilities and feel more assured in my role.

Once I finish my masters, I’m looking to work as an advanced practitioner within my trust and I’m considering making my way towards a nurse consultant position.

My advice

Make sure you:

  • Plan and prepare early
  • Complete pre-reading
  • Understand the basics of your modules before you start them
  • Take advantage of the support available at the Library
  • Use your lecturers and tutors if you're struggling with any assignments – they’re always happy to help!
