Course

Advanced Clinical Practice MSc

Entry year

2018

Why I chose Surrey

Before coming to Surrey, I studied an undergraduate course in food and human nutrition and completed a postgraduate diploma in adult nursing.

Since becoming an adult nurse, I’ve had several different roles and I’m currently an Advanced Critical Care Practitioner Trainee working at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. My training will ensure I can provide an excellent level of care for my patients and a requirement of this, is that I must complete an MSc Advanced Clinical Practice course.

As my training is funded by Health Education England, Surrey is the approved university for my area course, and I certainly haven’t been disappointed! An added bonus is that Surrey is accessible by car, meaning I can drive to my classes.

My course

The modules on the course have covered varying topics, with my favourites focusing on advanced assessment, clinical reasoning, critical care, and independent/supplementary prescribing (V300). These all had practical elements to them, which suit the skills I need for my role at the Royal Sussex. I’ve also found the health assessment module very relevant and useful for practice, while the research methods module has helped me to evaluate and critique research papers.

Overall, my lecturers have been very supportive and helpful with assignments too.

"When I complete my training, I’ll have the knowledge I need to progress within nursing practice."

My career and development

During my time at Surrey, I’ve gone through a marathon of modules. I failed my last module, and this really knocked me back. But by using this as a learning opportunity and understanding what I can do next time, I’ve become a stronger person.

When I complete my training, I’ll have the knowledge I need to progress within nursing practice. I’m planning to work full-time as an advanced critical care practitioner – this is the beauty of working for an organisation that funds your development.

My advice

Take your time, don’t rush things and read through assignments properly. If you’re unsure, seek academic support.
