Soft Matter, Biological and Medical Physics Group

The group’s experimental research spans research at the interface with biology - biological-physics, bionanotechnology and synthetic biology - experimental soft matter physics with a sustainability focus, and experimental research in both detector and materials physics, for medical and security applications. The modelling research is conducted mostly in collaboration with experimentalists, both within the group to drive leading-edge biological physics and with international and industrial partners working on magnetic resonance with particular emphasis on sustainability applications.

Welcome from head of group

Welcome to the webpages of the Soft Matter, Biological and Medical Physics research group of the School of Maths and Physics. We are a friendly group of about 30 staff and PhD students working on topics ranging from DNA computers to sustainable packaging to medical imaging. Please take a look around our website and if you have a question or are interested in joining us then drop either me or one of my academic colleagues an email.

Dr Richard Sear

Head of Soft Matter, Biological and Medical Physics

I am a computational physicist working in the fields of soft matter physics and biological physics. I am a member, and current head, of the Department's Soft Matter, Biological and Medical Physics group. The modules I teach range from maths for physicists to biological physics, and I am currently responsible for most of the teaching of numerical physics in the second year.Please...
