Dr Katy Peters
About
Biography
Dr Katy Peters is a Senior Lecturer and Director of Employability with the School of Law at the University of Surrey. She is a member of the Surrey Law and Technology Hub, and an Affiliate of Surrey’s Institute for People-Centred AI.
Katy’s PhD research explored the intersection between vulnerability, capacity and autonomy in clinical negligence litigation. She has a particular interest in the law relating to capacity, consent, participation and litigation support. She also carries out work relating to clinical legal education, widening participation in law, digital exclusion and effective access to the legal profession.
Katy convenes modules in Medical Law & Ethics, Tort and Professional Training as part of the LLB degree programmes. She also provides academic content on law for the University of Surrey’s Widening Participation & Outreach events.
Katy is a Programme Leader for the School of Law's Professional Legal Practice (SQE Pathway) LLM programme.
Katy is a UK-qualified Solicitor with a practice specialism in medical, health and community care law; including clinical negligence. She has advised and represented NHS Trusts, medical defence organisations, patients and carers. She has also been a Solicitor-Member of the Civil Procedure Rule Committee.
Katy works with the Law Society on its Mental Capacity (Welfare) Re-Accreditation Training and sits on an HRA Research Ethics Committee.
Katy is a Council Member of the Medico-Legal Society and a member of the European Association of Health Law. She is a member of the Law Society, the Society of Legal Scholars, the Association of Law Teachers, and the Clinical Legal Education Organisation. She is a member of Lawyers Against Poverty and has participated in their Twinning Programme alongside an academic from the University of Nairobi.
