Alumna joins Law Society Council

Law alumna, Bethany Walker, has been elected to the Law Society Council. She serves a three-year term representing junior lawyers. The Law Society is the professional membership body for solicitors which advocates on issues affecting solicitors, and the council governs the Society.

Bethany said:

“I am delighted and truly honoured to have been elected as one of six new Council members specifically representing the Junior Lawyer constituency. I begin my three-year tenure at the conclusion of the Law Society’s AGM on 9 October 2024 and I am very much looking forward to advocating for and supporting the 0-6 year PQE community of junior solicitors in England and Wales through my work on Council.

My time as an aspiring solicitor at the University of Surrey, and my time supporting the University and its students (with the same aspirations) since, has given me the opportunity to experience and witness first hand exactly the concerns and issues faced raised and faced by both aspiring and junior lawyers. I am confident that these experiences will allow me to authentically advocate on behalf of juniors on the issues that matter most and ensure our voices are heard within policy and decision making directly affecting our industry. I thank the University of Surrey and the Law School specifically for their unwavering support in this new venture, for which I am so grateful.”

Senior Lecturer in Law Dr Katy Peters, who taught Bethany when she was at Surrey, says:

"I was delighted – and not at all surprised – to hear of Bethany’s success in being elected as council member. She was an inspirational law student and ambassador whilst studying at Surrey and, since graduating, has provided mentorship and support to numerous prospective lawyers. I have no doubt that Bethany will being enthusiasm and dedication to her role on Council."

And already Bethany is helping those who follow her in this path: she contributed to an article in the Law Society Gazette (p35) to give tips for future council members on how to write their election statement.
