Mathematics and Computer Science Foundation Year

This one-year, full-time foundation year programme will prepare you for successful transition to our mathematics and computer science programmes. 

What you will study

The foundation year provides you with key knowledge and concepts of mathematics and computing topics, alongside the development of academic skills to make it easier to get started at university. 

It is an extra year of study at the start of your course that leads to one of our full degree programmes.  You will carry out individual project work in website development along with studying mathematics, computing, physics plus two optional modules.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught by an award-winning team of specialist foundation year lecturers. The team are experienced subject specialists who will equip you with a range of skills including academic referencing, computer programming, and data analysis so that you can succeed in your studies:

Day-to-day learning 

You’ll benefit from computer lab work, project work, seminars, tutorials, as well as lectures and independent study.

This provides you with the opportunity to explore topics in small groups and use specialist equipment to enrich your understanding. The transferable and mathematical skills modules will develop your research, presentation and self-reflection skills.

Our foundation academics apply effective and innovative teaching methods through interactive learning and direct observation. 

You’ll also be able to take advantage of our online electronic teaching resources, which both supplement and extend the material being presented.

Assessment

The assessment methods on the course have been designed to assist you to develop and adapt your skills for further study and employment. They include presentations, webpage design, online and in-person exams.  Your teaching team will assist you by providing feedback, advice and guidance to support you to succeed in your ambitions.
