"Surrey’s supportive and close-knit medical community stood out to me, making it an ideal place to begin my journey in medicine."
Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
As part of the inaugural cohort of Surrey’s medical school, I was excited by the opportunity to shape and contribute to the development of the Medicine programme. The University offers a forward-thinking curriculum that integrates early clinical exposure, which I found particularly appealing. Additionally, the proximity to London provides access to a wide range of medical opportunities, networking events and prestigious healthcare institutions. Surrey’s supportive and close-knit medical community also stood out to me, making it an ideal place to begin my journey in medicine.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
One of the best things about Surrey is its welcoming and vibrant student community, which fosters collaboration and support among peers. The Medicine course follows a spiral curriculum, allowing students to revisit and build upon previous knowledge in an integrated manner. With a small cohort size, students benefit from increased staff-to-student interaction, leading to more personalised learning experiences and greater academic support. The course is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences, including simulated patient interactions and placements, which help build clinical confidence early on. Additionally, the campus offers great facilities, including modern study spaces and anatomy dissection rooms which enhance the overall student experience.
"The Surrey Medical Society plays a key role in creating a sense of community, offering academic support, networking events and social activities that bring students together."
What are the best things about life here as a medical school student?
Life as a medical student at Surrey is both engaging and rewarding. The Surrey Medical Society plays a key role in creating a sense of community, offering academic support, networking events and social activities that bring students together. The University's location also allows for a good work–life balance, with access to both green spaces and the bustling city life of London just a short journey away.
What are your career plans?
While I have not yet decided on a specific specialty, I am particularly interested in dermatology and cardiology. Both fields appeal to me due to their complexity and their impact on patients’ lives. However, I also have an interest in finance and will explore potential ways to integrate it with medicine in the future, whether through healthcare management, policy or innovation. For now, my focus will be on gaining broad clinical exposure and understanding how different fields interconnect before determining my long-term path.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
