Graduation year
2024Why did you choose to pursue an MBA, and why did you choose Surrey?
I chose to pursue an MBA because I wanted to broaden my career horizons and transition into roles that combine strategic thinking, leadership, and innovation. With over nine years of experience in AI, Data Analytics and IT, I had a strong technical foundation, but I felt the need to gain a deeper understanding of business operations and decision-making to make a more meaningful impact in my career.
When considering where to study, I was continuously searching for an option near London. Surrey stood out as the perfect fit—not only because of its proximity to London but also for its strong reputation for innovation, sustainability, and practical learning. Attending Surrey's taster sessions further solidified my choice, as I experienced the programme's supportive learning environment and its focus on real-world application.
After my interview with the MBA Director, I was thrilled to be offered the Women in Leadership Scholarship, which made pursuing the programme even more accessible and rewarding. This scholarship was a recognition of my potential and aligned perfectly with my goal of breaking barriers and contributing as a leader in my field.
The combination of Surrey’s reputation, affordability, location, and the opportunity to receive a prestigious scholarship made it an easy decision. The MBA has since been a transformative journey, equipping me with the skills, confidence, and network to take my career to the next level.
What was the most valuable aspect of the MBA?
The most valuable aspect of the MBA was the holistic learning experience it provided, blending academic knowledge with real-world application. The programme’s focus on practical learning, through projects, case studies, and live consultancy opportunities, allowed me to immediately apply theoretical concepts to real business challenges. For instance, working on an AI-focused consultancy project with System1 helped me bridge my technical expertise with strategic business insights and gave me hands-on experience in innovation and problem-solving.
The leadership development aspect was equally impactful. The programme emphasised collaboration, critical thinking, and communication, which helped me grow as a leader and better understand how to inspire and manage teams effectively. Sessions on personal growth, networking opportunities, and the mentorship I received from faculty and peers added immense value to my journey.
Additionally, the diversity of the cohort enriched my learning experience. Interacting with professionals from different industries and cultural backgrounds broadened my perspective, teaching me to approach problems with a global and inclusive mindset.
Did you have the opportunity to network during your studies?
Yes, networking was one of the most enriching aspects of my MBA journey. The programme created numerous opportunities to connect with professionals, alumni, industry leaders, and my peers, all of whom brought diverse experiences and perspectives.
In fact, most of the opportunities I’ve received during and after the MBA were a direct result of networking. For example, I built a connection with a senior leader during one of our industry panel discussions, which eventually led to a valuable mentorship relationship.
Networking, for me, wasn’t just about connections—it was about building a community of like-minded professionals who challenge and motivate each other to achieve more.
Can you share any personal or professional achievements you’ve had since graduating from the MBA programme at Surrey?
Surrey’s MBA programme has had a profound impact on my career goals and aspirations, helping me achieve what once seemed like a distant dream. As an immigrant, securing a sponsored job in the UK comes with unique challenges, but the MBA programme provided me with the tools, connections, and confidence to navigate these hurdles effectively.
- Securing a Sponsored Job
As a newcomer, finding a sponsored role in the UK is particularly challenging. However, the skills, confidence, and network I developed during the MBA helped me overcome these barriers. I’m now working as an Innovation Manager at System1, where I contribute to AI-driven product development and strategy, aligning perfectly with my career aspirations. - Research Paper Published in Springer
My research on “Human Resources Analytics and Talent Management” was published by Springer, a proud academic achievement. This publication, available here, reflects the practical and impactful nature of my MBA journey and research work. - Conference Presentations
I had the opportunity to attend and present at several international conferences associated with the University of Surrey, which greatly enriched my professional profile. One of the highlights was visiting Qatar to present my research findings, an experience that further expanded my global exposure and network.
These achievements are a direct result of the Surrey MBA’s focus on practical learning, research opportunities, and global engagement. The programme gave me the platform and skills to turn aspirations into reality while making meaningful contributions to my field.
