2022What attracted you to choose the University of Surrey and to study your course here?
The University of Surrey was the perfect mix of what I was looking for. Big, but small enough that you feel valued. A lovely campus, and a respectable university ranking, especially in economics. I didn’t appreciate it when I was applying, but the support and emphasis on finding a placement during my degree is what really makes Surrey stand out. My year in industry really gave me perspective about what I wanted to do after my degree.
What is your strongest memory of your time at Surrey?
Sports have always been a huge part of my life. Being a part of Team Surrey, and the social side of University life that comes with that is brilliant.
What were the best things about your course?
The course had a great balance. The mathematical component really complemented the economics, where often you’re applying these concepts and skills. Honestly, I never had a career plan, and I just wanted to keep my options as open as physically possible. An Economics and Mathematics degree is gold dust on the job market!
What do you do now and what do you find most enjoyable about your work?
I am now a fully funded Economics PhD Student, continuing at the University of Surrey. While I enjoyed my placement, it reinforced my desire to pursue further academic studies upon my return to the university. Studying advanced courses and engaging in cutting edge research at the frontier of economics!
What is your advice for students aspiring to work in your profession?
Stay curious, and always make an effort with others. Your career is never a solo mission. Whether it’s a PhD or working in the city, people skills should be high up on your agenda!
Your time at University is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Surrey provides so many opportunities for self-development, and fostering relationships. Try as many things as you can, stay busy, and give everything you do, your all!
