I’ve always had a passion for film and TV and it wasn’t until I discovered this course that I found out about the possibility of working on the more engineering/technical side of industry, which really appealed to me.

Why did you choose Surrey?

What appealed to me most about Surrey was the fact that Surrey is so highly regarded when it comes to career prospects. The university seemed motivated in making graduates employable and giving them skills to aid in their future career as opposed to only focusing on the academic success of students.

Coming from a background in Computer Science and having A-Levels in Maths and Physics I knew I wanted to find a career path where I could use these skills in a more intriguing way, away from the more traditional careers paths these subjects often lead to. I’ve always had a passion for film and TV and it wasn’t until I discovered this course that I found out about the possibility of working on the more engineering/technical side of industry, which really appealed to me.

What made you choose this course?

What I like most is the broad range of knowledge and skills you can acquire across so many areas of film and TV including broadcast engineering, cinematography, computer systems, sound for film and TV, and more.

There is an intricate balance between creative, technical and practical areas of learning.

I also enjoy the level of collaboration that this course allows for. You’re able to connect with everyone on the course across all year groups and work together to create exciting projects. There is also the opportunity to collaborate with students from other areas including the Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) course and also with students from the Guildford School of Acting.

I have really grown to appreciate all of the academics on this course. Having smaller class sizes compared to other degree courses means that you get to know all members of Music and Media very well. It's therefore so easy to get help with any problems you might have and I have found that you are definitely treated with respect - more like a colleague than a student.

What's been your favourite experience at Surrey?

One of my favourite experiences since being at Surrey was being able to be part of the production team for Univision 2023. Since I was only in my first year of the course I only had a small role, but it was so exiting to be able to experience and be part of the largest student-led broadcast in the country!

It was also the first time I ever got to see my name appear on the credits which was a very exciting moment.

My time at Surrey has enabled me to become much more independent and learn more about myself as an individual. I have made a lot of great friends in my time here, both through my course and other aspects of university life, and I have met many knowledgeable academics and industry professionals who have helped me navigate the way towards my future career.
