The Biological Sciences BSc gives me the chance to explore various areas of interest and gain a clearer understanding of where my true passions lie within the field. The course offers diverse learning opportunities while highlighting the interconnectedness of biology as a whole.
During my final-year research project, I explored the probiotic potential of bacteria extracted from honey made by bees in our campus hives. I developed new skills in clinical research and gained confidence in a clinical setting, as well as acquiring valuable knowledge and practical experience that will benefit future job opportunities. The project also broadened my intellectual horizons and opened doors to research areas I hadn’t considered before.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
Surrey provides countless opportunities to discover new passions and try activities that wouldn't be available elsewhere. I tried MMA for the first time and fell in love with it – Surrey gave me the chance to uncover skills I never knew I had.

What do you want to do when you graduate?
During my degree, I explored a wide range of topics within biology, building a solid foundation. This gave me a clear understanding of the specific field I want to pursue, while also gaining knowledge in other areas for added flexibility in future career paths. I aim to pursue a career in scientific research within the humanitarian sector, where I can combine my passion for helping people with my love for science.
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?
My advice would be to take advantage of the wide range of clubs, societies and activities available. There are countless opportunities to explore new skills, make new friends and discover activities you might not have considered before. Trying new things opens the door to so many new opportunities and helps university life feel inclusive. Academically, I’d recommend staying open-minded about your degree choice and exploring the various courses on offer. I hadn’t considered biological sciences before, but now I can’t imagine doing anything else.
