Course
Economics and Finance MScEntry year
2018"For me, having a good understanding of economics, in the most general sense, means to have an understanding of how the world works, have a better perspective on the interconnectedness of nations through their economies and to be able to offer a contribution that helps others to understand too.
I love that on this course we are challenged to think and are exposed to theories in greater depth; you go as far as you want to, which is fantastic for the curious. We learn more formal ways of expression through mathematics, again great for those wanting to enter the field at a high level.
In my induction week, the first place I found was the Library; it really is the perfect environment for all students and our different studying styles, with ample spaces for individual, group, silent and quiet study. I personally like silent study and the newly refurbished silent room on the fifth floor is perfect!
"I have found the advice from staff and my personal tutor very helpful in charting a better course for my career."
All the academic staff I have been taught by are highly competent, enthusiastic and kind, with impressive experiences in the field which makes their advice very credible. I have found the advice from staff and my personal tutor very helpful in charting a better course for my career. The resources and facilities we have access to here at Surrey are definitely not lacking either, including several software packages. While at Surrey I have had access to MatLab, EViews and even the Bloomberg Terminal, which I hadn’t previously known how to use.
Since coming to Surrey, I’ve become more confident as a person and as an economist; through my studies and interactions with staff I now have a better ‘toolkit’ to work with. I’m pleased to have achieved excellent results throughout the course and be recognised as a potential candidate to receive a studentship for a PhD in Economics; it’s great to know that staff have a genuine interest in our progress and development. Despite the masters being only one year, I’m surprised to have also made really good friends, curious and likeminded individuals who make the experience here even more enjoyable.
My time at Surrey has definitely had a positive impact on my employability – whether I decide to work in the public or private sector I know I will graduate from the course prepared and well-rounded to make a significant contribution to teams and add value."
