Choosing Surrey

I attended an open day with my grandpa, who’s also an engineer. We both loved the facilities Surrey had to offer. I really liked the feel of the place, too. Its location, being outside of London but not too far, also appealed to me because I go to a part-time acting school in London.

The course outline was my favourite out of all the different universities I was considering. The amount of practical work was a big factor because I like the hands-on work our laboratory modules provide.

I also love playing sports, football in particular, so the fact that the state-of-the-art Surrey Sports Park is nearby helped my decision.

Why electronic engineering?

I loved physics and computing in secondary school and I knew I wanted to study something related to technology. My choice was between computer science and electronic engineering. Computer science didn’t give me the practical circuit-building work I wanted, but the electronic engineering course gave me both the practical work and the programming.

I was also a big fan of Doctor Who when I was younger and I started loving physics from there. I started trying to design and build my own projects and I started to program a little. I had some great physics teachers whose classes I enjoyed, too.

My course

I’m enjoying the course. The first year went really well for me and, although the workload for my second year seems like a lot more, I’m trying to carry on the momentum from Year 1 and do the best I can.

The laboratory module and the C programming module have been my favourite parts of the degree so far because I love the practical work they offer.

Life at Surrey

I’m enjoying myself and I’ve made really good friends on and outside of my course. I’m part of the African Caribbean Society, Woke Society, the University football team and I also play in a six-a-side football league at Surrey Sports Park every week.

In my first year, I lived in student accommodation. I was lucky enough to be living with a really good bunch of people and we had a lot of fun together. The accommodation I was staying in was also newly built and it looked great. It was right next to Surrey Sports Park, too, so I had easy access to the football grounds.

The future

My abiding memories will definitely be the ones created with the friends I’ve made – and will make – during my time here. I’ve met great people, who I hope to know for a long time after I’ve finished studying for my degree.

When my course ends, I hope to find a job where I’ll be able to make a positive impact on people’s lives. I’m interested in the applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning that produce sophisticated solutions to real-world problems.
