"I particularly valued the consistent support from both lab assistants and lecturers, who were always available to help with any questions. The university also provided additional support through bootcamps, office hours, and the PALS scheme, which helped me with my studies."

What did you like about your course and why?

I really liked how well-structured the BSc Computer Science course at Surrey is. In the first year, it laid a solid foundation with programming languages and mathematics. Then, in the second year, I got to explore more advanced topics in different domains like Computer Security, Artificial Intelligence, Software Development, and Parallel Computing, which helped me understand what areas I’m most interested in and which ones I’m not. I particularly valued the consistent support from both lab assistants and lecturers, who were always available to help with any questions. The university also provided additional support through bootcamps, office hours, and the PALS scheme, which helped me with my studies.

What do you enjoy most about Surrey?

For me, it was all about the opportunities. As an international student moving from Sri Lanka, I found so many ways to grow at Surrey. I served as Vice President of the Computer Science Society, volunteered for Nightline and SurreyConnects, worked as a lab helper and student buddy, represented the university at open days, and took part in various part-time opportunities. I also participated in a mentorship programme that eventually laid the foundation for my placement at Microsoft. I’ve always valued the opportunities at Surrey and enjoyed making the most of them.

Tell us about your Professional Training placement

For my Professional Training placement, I’m currently working as a Technical Specialist in Azure Digital & App Innovation at Microsoft. My role involves working closely with Microsoft products that enhance developer productivity, such as DevBox, GitHub Copilot, and Azure OpenAI Studio. I’m also gaining valuable exposure to coding in C#, which I’ve been eager to learn.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

At the moment, I’m exploring different career options. I enjoy a mix of both communication and hands-on work, which allows me to collaborate with others while also having time to code. I’m currently leaning towards DevOps as a career path, and with my ongoing learning in Azure, I’m considering pursuing a career in that field.

Your advice to new students?

My advice would be to stay proactive. Enjoy your time at university, get involved in extracurricular activities and have fun, but make sure to stay focused on your academics as well. Do well in your first year to build a strong foundation. Talk to a lot of people, lecturers, placement students, colleagues, always expand your network. Most importantly, take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. Each opportunity will connect you with different people and help you grow as a person.
