Influence of forage type on gut microbiome

2019Overview
A longitudinal study on 20 Welsh Mountain ponies to evaluate the long-term impact of feeding different types of preserved forage, hay or haylage. We identified significant differences in faecal microbial communities of ponies fed hay vs haylage and, interestingly, distinctive urinary metabolic profiles for the two forage types. These findings suggest that choice of forage type may have implications for disease susceptibility and obesity.
