Why Murals in My Front Yard? Exploring the Mutual Gaze and the Impacts of ‘Urban Art’ towards (Re-)Creation of Social Value and Community IdentityThe growing trend of urban regeneration, celebrating culture and identity of communities through urban art is attracting increasing numbers of tourists to destinations as images and experiences of these destinations are shared through social media. While such proliferation stimulates the benefits associated with higher visitor numbers, it should not be overlooked that overtourism can trigger social dysfunction; alienating residents and tourists from place and creating cultures of contestation and discontent that challenge the identity of place and cause significant social tensions between residents and visitors. In this respect, this PhD project aims to explore this social issue derived from street arts and urban tourism and to contribute to analytical frameworks and theories for (re-)creation of social values and community identity.
