5 reasons to study PGDip Physician Associate Studies at Surrey

1. First-class facilities

Opening in spring 2019, our brand-new simulation suite features two large modern wards, an intensive care unit, an operating theatre, a community flat and an ambulance bay. Within this new space, there are large student study spaces, an immersive projector set up – which allows us to create full interactive learning scenarios – and a self-directed learning lab where you can practice essential clinical skills.

2. Case-based learning and clinical skill development

Our PGDip Physician Associate Studies course will give you the skills you need to assess, diagnose and manage various medical problems as a competent and confident medical professional. It will enable you to develop the well-rounded knowledge and skills that modern practice demands and which potential employers search for.  Your learning will be consolidated through case-based learning and clinical practice developed in small groups.

3. Get work experience within the NHS

From the start of your course, you’ll have direct contact with patients at a general practice (GP), under the supervision of an experienced senior doctor. In the second year, you’ll be on placement five days a week at a Trust in various specialist areas, changing placements every three weeks so you can experience a range of departments and patients with numerous conditions.

4. Learn in a collaborative environment

As a member of Surrey’s School of Health Sciences, most of your teaching will be conducted by Surrey staff and local NHS clinicians who will motivate you and help drive your ambition. We have lecturers who specialise in certain areas and have worked in a diverse range of environments from GPs to A&E to specialist secondary care. This has a number of benefits for learning, including work-based and combined assessments which further develop your skills and help transform you into a capable healthcare professional.

5. Be prepared for the future   

After you have successfully completed your course, you’ll need to sit the National Assessment for Physician Associates. This is set by the Faculty of Physician Associates at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Passing the National Assessment will allow you to be put onto the National Register for Physician Associates, so that you can practise clinically in the UK. We prepare you through similar assessments on the course and passing on the knowledge you need to take the exam.
