Lewis Elton Lecture Series
The Lewis Elton lecture is the annual showcase lecture of the Department of Physics at the University of Surrey. It has been running since 2012 with previous speakers including Professor Brian Cox and Nobel Prize winner, Sir Roger Penrose. The 10th Annual Lewis Elton Lecture was given by pioneering astrophysicist Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell in February 2021 on the subject of Pulsars - their discovery and impact.
Jim Meets... Series
Author, broadcaster and theoretical physicist, Professor Jim Al-Khalili hosts a series of 'an audience with' interviews at the University of Surrey. His past guests have included Brian Cox, David Attenborough, Ruby Wax, Dara O'Briain, Rowan Williams, Robert Winston, Noel Fitzpatrick and Brian Blessed.
Times Higher Education Young Universities Summit 2019
Surrey had the privilege of hosting the annual Times Higher Education Young Universities Summit in June 2019 in partnership with the University of Wollongong. Bringing together senior leaders from universities all over the world to explore and demonstrate how young universities - defined as higher education institutions established since 1945 - can expand their spheres of influence both globally and locally.
Saying ‘thank you’ to the First World War generation
In November 2018 the University of Surrey in partnership with the Royal British Legion commemorated the centenary of the end of World War One and officially launched this year’s Poppy Appeal in Surrey. 100 staff and students came together by the University of Surrey campus lake to recognise the legacy that generation left us as part of the Royal British Legion’s #ThankYou100 campaign.
Celebrating 50 years in Guildford
The Festival of Wonder closed the University’s 50th Anniversary year in style, as alumni and local residents were welcomed onto campus to share in the momentous ‘birthday party’ celebrations.
Welcoming a very special guest
The University was honoured to welcome Her Majesty The Queen, accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, on 15 October 2015 to officially open its new School of Veterinary Medicine.
