Free final performance of The Planets, by Gustav Holst, from the University of Surrey Orchestra and special guests.

Description

Twice a year, the University of Surrey Music and Media Department invites local musicians, alumni, staff and students to join the University of Surrey Orchestra to rehearse and perform a piece of music from scratch, in just one day.

On this occasion, musicians will be rehearsing ‘The Planets’ by Gustav Holst. You are invited to join us in University Hall on the Stag Hill campus for the final evening performance from 5.30-6.15pm.

Music

The Planets, Op. 32, is a seven-movement orchestral suite by the English composer Gustav Holst, written between 1914 and 1917. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its supposed astrological character. The music is recognised widely.

Russell Keable

Russell Keable has established a reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting musicians and is Head of Conducting at the University of Surrey. As a conductor he has been praised in the national and international press: ‘Keable and his orchestra did magnificently’, wrote the Guardian; ‘one of the most memorable evenings at the South Bank for many a month’, said the Musical Times. Russell is internationally recognised for his world-class performances with non-professional orchestras.
