The pianists, both renowned for their commitment to music of the 20th and 21st centuries, present a programme by pioneering American composers. Alan Hovhaness’ Mihr features sounds and structures from Armenia and the East, Colin McPhee also looks eastwards to Indonesia in his Ceremonial Gamalan Music, while post-minimalist John Adams is closer to home with Hallelujah Junction that takes its name from a truck stop near the California-Nevada border. Completing the programme are short works by two of America’s greatest innovators: master of the player piano Conlon Nancarrow, and minimalist pioneer Steve Reich.
