International Veterinary Simulation in Teaching (InVeST)

We invite together a community of veterinary and medical clinical skills educators for the 8^th InVeST Conference. The conference is focussed on the use and development of models and simulations in veterinary education. We hope to build collaborations and share ideas to improve the teaching and assessment of our students.

Overview

InVeST is an international veterinary clinical skills and simulation conference for learning and networking between researchers, developers and educational institutions on the use of simulation in veterinary education. InVeST also encourages research regarding the use and effectiveness of simulation and the use of part-task trainers in veterinary education.

This two-and-a-half day conference will be held Wednesday 28 - Friday 30 August 2024. This is only the second time the conference has been back in Europe (last in Hannover 2013) and the first time it has been held in the UK.

The School of Veterinary Medicine will be celebrating its 10^th birthday at Surrey and hosting InVeST for 2024 feels like a fitting tribute, especially as we have focussed the teaching here around clinical skills training and simulations.

The University of Surrey is easy to access, within an hour of two international London airports (Heathrow and Gatwick), easily accessible by car or public transport. Situated in the beautiful town of Guildford, with its own castle and historic links with Lewis Carroll and Alan Turing, and a stone’s throw from the Surrey Hills, renowned for glorious views and walking and cycling trails.

Abstracts

"Robust assessment: building an assessment strategy worthy of accreditation."

The Surrey assessment strategy has been carefully designed to ensure that we are meeting the requirements of the RCVS accreditation. During this session we provide an overview of our final year assessment strategy outlining which assessments sit within the workplace and which are carried out at the vet school. We will discuss how the needs of accreditation has influenced our assessment strategy and showcase our annual partner conference and how this aligns with the quality assurance of our assessments.

"Bridging the gap: the importance of feedback for curriculum development."

Using feedback to inform the development of our curriculum is a key strategy at Surrey Vet School. The RCVS graduate outcomes survey is a useful starting point which provides general feedback from our graduates and their mentors regarding how their veterinary degree prepared them for clinical practice. We will explore how this feedback, coupled with feedback from our CIMs, LVCPS and final year assessments, is used to identify and bridge gaps in our curriculum. We will also hear from our recent graduates employed within our partner network as they reflect on their IMR experience and consider how it has set them up for their career as a veterinary surgeon.

"Managing the distribution: Supporting student learning in a distributed model of veterinary education."

The Surrey Clinical Instruction Mentors (CIMS) are integral to the success of our distributed model of clinical teaching. Alongside the LVCPs (Lecturers in Veterinary Clinical Practice), these roles support student learning and development during the IMR year at Surrey. But what exactly is a CIM and an LVCP? In this session we will provide an overview of the CIM role and how it fits into the Surrey BVMSci curriculum. We will summarise our CIM training programme, exploring how it was created, how it complements our curriculum and how we provide quality assurance to satisfy the RCVS. We will explore the CIM/Student/LVCP relationship and hear from some of our CIMS and LVCPs to gain their perspective on the importance of this role.
