Following the success of last year’s Inaugural Annual Open Research Lecture, the 2023 Open Research and research culture event took place on 2 February. The event was attended by over 250 people in person and over 70 people online, demonstrating the University of Surrey’s status as a lead UK institution in Open Research and our strong upward trajectory in Open Research culture.

The vibrant event was opened by President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu, who gave an example of how Open Research can change lives from his own work on nanomaterials for water purification, and emphasised that Open Research must be an integrated part of academic activity – the cultural norm.

The event started with three inspiring Open Research case studies from University of Surrey researchers. This was followed by two innovative and thought-provoking invited speakers. Professor Andrew George MBE, Chair of the newly-launched UK Committee on Research Integrity (Imperial College London), presented on the topic of research integrity and best practice in research, whilst Dr Tanita Casci, Director of Research Strategy and Policy Unit (University of Oxford) presented on research culture, talking us through five steps to a positive research culture.

Talks were followed by a round table discussion on the theme of debunking myths in Open Research and research culture, with panel members Professor Katriina Whitaker (University of Surrey), Dr Tanita Casci, and Professor Andrew George MBE.

Over lunch, there was an opportunity for networking and to visit information stations on Open Research, Surrey Reproducibility Society (SRS), and the Faculty Librarians, as well as view posters on Open Research and Research Culture.

The event was closed by two breakout discussion sessions on UNESCO Open Science principles and Wellcome Café Culture.
