Abstract

Studying a Mathematics degree, I’d constantly have words like data, scientist, engineer, and analyst thrown at me when taking a look for the first time into the job world. And as an undergrad, I would look at these jobs and they would feel so out of reach, making it incredibly difficult to understand how to get there. You’re being taught all these statistical methods and theories that are applied to classroom questions; but what does this look like in the real world?

At Medialab we know that information is not the same thing as understanding. Figures and facts are not insights. Observations may be interesting, but they do not spark transformative ideas. And we know that DATA is at the heart of any intellectual decision! And as such, I present the sexiest/most in demand job of the 21st Century! In this talk, we hope to give you a flavour of what a Data Science/Analyst/Engineer does, how to get into it, and where you can go with it.
