Overview
The University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) is an academic network spanning four continents which brings together some of the world’s leading universities: North Carolina State University (NCSU), USA; the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil; the University of Surrey (UoS), UK; and the University of Wollongong (UoW), Australia. Established in 2011, the UGPN aims to “develop sustainable world-class research, education and knowledge transfer through an active international network of selected universities collaborating in research, learning and teaching to benefit global society”.
The Conference supported the mission of the network, providing unique opportunities for interaction and discussion on a variety of topics, including academic workshops on four key research themes:
- Digital innovation and applications
- Delivering global health and wellbeing
- Producing a smarter planet
- Entrepreneurship and economic development.
Programme
The Conference was officially opened by Professor G. Q. Max Lu (Vice-Chancellor of the University of Surrey) and included a keynote speech from Professor Derk-Jan Dijk (Director Surrey Sleep Research Centre) and a guest lecture from Vivienne Stern (Director of Universities UK International (UUKi), on international funding opportunities. Research workshops focused on each of the four key themes which were led by senior academics from each of the UGPN Partner institutions.
In addition to research workshops, the programme included ample time for networking and 1:1 meetings with participants from UGPN partners. Attendance of those who had not yet worked with UGPN colleagues was particularly encouraged.
