Postgraduate research in ageing

Postgraduate researchers are crucial to the work of the CEA. Surrey provides a community atmosphere and supportive environment through our Doctoral College to ensure researchers get everything they needs to achieve their best outcomes.

>80 PGRs working in ageing research

46% health and medical sciences; 36% engineering and physical sciences; 18% arts and social sciences

Overview

Surrey currently has over 80 PGRs who are making an impact in on the development of healthy 'whole life ageing' including the utilisation of fine arts interventions, age–inclusive hospitality, sleep specialisations, and the use of immersive and user–oriented technology.

These researchers, in conjunction with their supervisors sit across all of Surrey faculties and they represent a vital new, interdisciplinary research community in established and emerging areas of healthy ageing. It will be these PGRs who will in turn will provide the critical mass needed to drive the future of the CEA.

My PhD is exploring the identities and practices of a group of older rock music fans who were born between the years of 1945 and 1965 – the so-called Baby Boomers. Providing the historical context of their early lives and their developing fandom, the thesis focuses on how they manage, negotiate and, in many cases, overcome the challenges that come about as part of being an older rock music fan. Consequently, the thesis engages with debates about resistance, leisure and ageism in current society. I chose to undertake my PhD at Surrey because my supervisors, between them, have interests in music, older fans and cultural gerontology. Fran O’Neil (PGR)

Our research at the University of Surrey focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the reduced vaccine efficacy in the elderly, which will help to develop novel adjuvants and vaccines that will prevent infectious diseases and promote healthy ageing.
