Course details
This exclusively online course will run twice throughout the year, January–June and June–November. It will begin in June 2025.
Applicants to this course must have completed the GEMS Middle East Higher Diploma in Preclinical Sciences (MedStart Diploma) with a GPA of ≥2.5/4 and have accredited English language proficiency*.
The following centres are authorised to deliver the MedStart Diploma:
- British International University, Erbil, Kurdistan (Iraq)
- Ajman University, United Arab Emirates, United Arab Emirates
- Denning School of Medical Sciences, Pakistan
- Amity Global Institute, Singapore.
*IETLS Academic: A score of at least 6.5 overall and at least 6.0 in all components.

Course structure
What you will study
On this intensive 'top-up' course, you’ll build on the knowledge gained from your diploma and gain a thorough understanding of biomedical science. You’ll explore topics such as cancer, clinical immunology and immunohematology, infectious diseases, and global health challenges. You’ll also complete a research project.
Academic year structure
This course will take six months to complete.
Teaching and learning
This course will be taught by academic staff from the University of Surrey who are experts in their field and whose teaching approach centres on real-world experience, research and innovation. The knowledge you acquire will be up-to-date and relevant to employers.
Students will engage in learning through a variety of methods, including lectures, tutorial support, workshops, and directed and self-directed activities. Our teaching methods incorporate case/problem-based learning and emphasise lifelong learning, open inquiry, teamwork and critical thinking – all crucial transferrable skills.
Assessment
Assessment varies depending on the module but will include examinations, essays, oral presentations, written reports, case history analysis, data interpretation and problem-solving.
