Research and job opportunities

The Astrophysics group at Surrey encourages expressions of interest for applications to a number of fellowships and studentships. The group’s research combines the latest observational data with state-of-the-art modelling and simulations to answer fundamental questions related to the formation of stars and galaxies, stellar astrophysics, galaxy evolution, dynamics and archaeology, stellar streams, dark matter, cosmology, black hole binaries and sources of gravitational waves.

Please contact Alessia Gualandris a.gualandris@surrey.ac.uk and Denis Erkal d.erkal@surrey.ac.uk to discuss your application well in advance of the fellowship deadline as we hold an internal selection process.  For the expression of interest, please provide:

  • A curriculum vitae and publication list.
  • A one-page research proposal. If you have a full three-page proposal, you can also submit that.

Surrey policy is that all holders of five-year fellowships will be offered a permanent position, subject to performance review within the first three years of the fellowship.

If you are interested in a scheme that does not appear in the list of fellowships, please do still contact us to discuss it. We offer a full package of guidance and support to all selected candidates to assist them throughout the application process.

We particularly encourage expressions of interest from underrepresented groups.

PhD positions

Every year we advertise funded studentships around the autumn time. We encourage interested candidates to inquire about opportunities. Please feel free to send informal inquiries to Alessia Gualandris or Professor Justin Read.
