Postgraduate application timeline

Find out about the application process for postgraduate courses at the University of Surrey.

  • Stage 1

    Submit your application form

    Submit your application via our course pages.

  • Stage 2

    Log into the applicant portal and complete fees status questionnaire

    Within 24 hours of submitting your application you will receive an email which will contain your University Number followed by another email with a task to complete the fee status questionnaire. Once you have received the initial email, it will take 24 hours for your applicant account to be created, and you will then be able to log in to your account. 

    Using the applicant portal, you will be able to respond to any requests for information and track the status of your application. Tasks that you need to complete will appear in the ‘application summary’ section.

  • Stage 3

    Initial application screening

    During this stage your application will be reviewed against our published criteria. 

    We will also check your personal statement and supporting information that you have provided with your application form. 

    We may also use your referee details to request a reference.

    You do not need to send us anything further at this stage. We will be in touch when we require more information to make a decision on your application.

  • Stage 4

    Academic referral

    For some programmes, an academic may wish to have a closer look at your application, including the individual modules you have previously studied, so we will pass your application to them for review. It may take up to a week for your application to be returned to us.

  • Stage 5

    Selection event*

    If you have been invited to an event, you will receive an email with instructions and a link to book the event.

  • Stage 6

    Application decision made

    To view your application, you will need to log into the applicant portal.


    You will then be able to view your offer letter and print off a copy.

  • Stage 7

    Decide on your offer

    You can accept or decline your offer by clicking ‘Accept/Reject’ button in the decision summary section.

  • Stage 8

    Pay your deposit

    To pay your deposit, log into the applicant portal, go to ‘Select your enrolment status’ and click on accept.

  • Stage 9

    Complete task list

    If there are any pending tasks, they will appear in the application summary section.

  • Stage 10

    Student visa*

    To request a visa to study in the UK you need to complete your CAS application via CAS Shield. You will receive an email with instructions and a link to set up your CAS Shield account. If you do not need a CAS, you will still need to complete this task to confirm this with us.

  • Stage 11

    Welcome to the University of Surrey

    We usually send out welcome instructions approximately four weeks prior to your start date. You will only receive this information once your offer is unconditional and:

    • You have accepted the offer
    • Confirmed your right to study/ completed the CAS request process
    • Confirmed your fee status.
