Emily Baynes is studying for her MSc in Batteries, Fuel Cells and Energy Storage Systems in our Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, after initially doing her undergraduate degree in our Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Here, she tells us about the work she's doing with a community-led solar farm and her ambitions for the future...

The opportunity to do a Professional Training placement was a huge part of why I chose to come to Surrey, particularly because it’s relatively unique for a BA (Hons) English Literature course." 

My course has been challenging and engaging; however, when I finish my degree I’ll have eight exemptions from the professional ACA exams, which aids employability.

The main thing I learnt on placement was never to be afraid to ask. Everyone you ever work with had to start off somewhere.

Without doubt my greatest achievement of my final year was co-writing Piece of Your Heart by Meduza (featuring Goodboys) and seeing it rise to number two in the UK singles chart.
