Why I chose Surrey

As an A&E nurse by background, I had dedicated many years to building my clinical knowledge through direct patient care. However, as I transitioned into a healthcare education role as a Practice Development Nurse, I found myself grappling with the challenge of effectively engaging and inspiring healthcare staff to pursue continuous learning and professional development. A colleague within my team was studying the Education for Health Professionals PGDip at the University of Surrey and was getting great results with her staff. She recommended the course to me, and I never looked back! Completing the course has been an enriching and rewarding experience.

My course

The course provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies involved in educating healthcare practitioners and has equipped me with the necessary skills to become a competent and effective educator in the healthcare field. I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse blend of healthcare professionals on the course: there was a fantastic mix of doctors, nurses and midwives, each hailing from various specialties within the private and public sectors.

"The Kate Granger Building, with its modern, clean and spacious learning environment, provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout my studies."

The teaching staff were experts in their fields with extensive clinical knowledge giving them a unique understanding of the current challenges facing the healthcare sector. The programme's structure has allowed me to explore various teaching methodologies, curriculum design and assessment strategies specific to the healthcare sector. They were exceptionally supportive, guiding me through the curriculum and fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking and collaborative learning.

Embracing a blended learning approach of face-to-face classes and online learning, I found the curriculum workload to be conveniently adaptable to my work schedule, while also enabling me to forge connections and friendships. The Kate Granger Building, with its modern, clean and spacious learning environment, provided a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout my studies. The library and academic resources, along with the readily available support, were easily accessible, both on campus and online

My career and development

The course provided me with invaluable tools to support the ongoing development of fellow healthcare professionals. I gained a deep understanding of the diverse range of learners and, most importantly, acquired the skills to achieve learning outcomes effectively. This newfound confidence allows me to deliver training using best-practice techniques, empowering others to reach their individual learning goals with enthusiasm and determination. I have progressed from working as a Practice Development Nurse to developing and coordinating nursing programmes.
