We offer intensive week-long Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses, enabling organisations and their employees to develop knowledge and expertise in specific areas. These can be taken as one-off courses or as part of a master's degree.

Industrial Advisory Boards
We have an Industrial Advisory Board for both our computer science and electronic engineering disciplines. These include members from local, national, and international companies and provide us with support on our taught courses, including advice on curriculum development from a professional perspective and the opportunity for guest lectures.

Syed Akhtar
Head of Development, Gold-i
Biography
Syed is the head of development at Gold-i. He is primarily producing highly reliable, accurate, and very low latency applications for FX, CFDs, and Crypto trading. He is also responsible for data analytics and building tools which generate actionable insights to help brokers in their trading risk management.
He completed two degrees from the University of Surrey. The first one was MSc. in Satellite Communication Engineering in 2006 and the second one was PhD in Predictive Analytics in 2014. He has also worked for more than 5 years in the space industry building OBDH (On Board Data Handling) systems for earth observation satellites.
Laura Bouchard
EMEIA Partnerships and Industries Lead, Apple Europe
Biography
Laura runs the Partnerships & Industries team at Apple. In this role she leads the team responsible for industry strategy across EMEIA and the team responsible for Strategic ISV and Regional/Global Systems Integrator partnerships.
Prior to Apple, Laura ran the Central Government business at Microsoft. Laura has 20+ years experience in the Information Technology industry and prior to Microsoft held a number of senior management positions in the channel, where we was accountable for driving partner revenue and growth across the key partners in the UK. Laura's passion is people leadership and creating a high energy and inclusive culture.
Mark Buckwell
Executive Security Architect, IBM
Biography
Mark is an experienced Cloud Security Architect and is part of a global team helping clients on their journey to Hybrid Multi-Cloud. He has worked for IBM since 1993 taking a wide variety of roles in architecting and delivering large-scale security solutions for clients. His current area of interest includes integrating encryption and key management solutions to effectively protect personal data.
He is the global leader for IBM's Architectural Thinking for Security course taught globally within IBM and is an Associate Tutor at the University of Surrey delivering the course as an MSc module.
In his spare time he enjoys dabbling with air pollution sensors and weather stations that are part of a global sensor network.
Alex Dicketts
Senior Software Engineer, Gemba Advantage
Biography
Since graduating from the Computing and Information Technology programme at the University of Surrey in 2012, Alex has held a number of roles in Cyber Security and Software Engineering in companies in the Defence and Blockchain industries.
Currently a senior software engineer at Gemba Advantage, Alex consults for government clients on their engineering and security challenges.
Katie Facey
Certification Test Manager, Consult Hyperion
Biography
Katie is Certification Test Manager at Consult Hyperion and a University of Surrey alumni. Katie graduated in 2009 with a BSc in Computing and Information Technology including a one-year work placement experience. After graduating she returned to her placement company (Consult Hyperion) as a full-time member of staff where she became a dedicated tester. Today she is a Test Manager with 10 years’ experience in testing and payments technology, specifically contactless transactions.
Katie creates test plans and manages the testing of applications across a variety of technologies including smart cards, payment terminals and card readers, web services and sites, databases, mobile phones and tablets using both custom and industry standard test tools. Katie works with clients across the payments industry including banks, acquirers, issuers and device manufacturers. Often working with innovative technologies or new uses for existing technologies while testing proof of concepts or pilot products. Since 2011 Katie has been supervisor to computing placement students from the university and is now bringing her experience back to the department as a member of the IAB.
Nicola Hills

Biography
They have been creating market leading application management software for the worlds top financial institutions for over 13 years and where they also just released the coolest real-time, big data analytics product on the planet.
Prior to joining ITRS Nickie worked in IBM for 22 years, latterly as a Director of software development and for the most part in the UK, on major enterprise middleware. Nickie is an active champion of diversity in IT, believing that diverse teams make for not only the best working environment but also the most innovative, well rounded software; after over 25 years in the industry she feels she may finally be growing out of her imposter syndrome!
Julian Holmes
Principal Consultant, Thoughtworks
Biography
Julian studied BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Technology at the Department of Computing, graduating in 1993.
After departing university, Julian worked for a number of large-scale IT departments, software companies and consultancies, firstly as developer and later in a diverse set of software delivery roles. This broad experience, together with the scale of the projects and organisations he worked with, led him to set up his own consulting business in 2007.
Today, as a Principal Consultant for Thoughtworks, Julian leads large-scale transformation projects for Thoughtworks clients, to help them increase their software development efficiency and establish an effective software delivery organisation.
Outside of the workplace Julian is highly active in his local squash community, playing, organising and coaching the game at both a club and county level.
Angela Jones
Head of Technical Services, Data and Analytics – London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG)
Biography
Angela leads the Technical Services team for LSEG’s Data & Analytics business. Angela has held several roles across application support, infrastructure support and program management over the past 15 years and has global experience from working in the UK, US, Singapore and India.
Angela graduated from the University of Surrey in 2006 (BSC Hons. Computing and Information Technology).
Richard Lowe
Senior Software Engineer – Amazon
Biography
Richard Lowe graduated from the University of Surrey in 2012 having completed his degree in Computing Science. After spending his placement year at Microsoft, Richard returned as a graduate, working as a Software Engineer Consultant.
After 7 years, Richard left Microsoft to join Amazon, primarily working on Machine Learning applications and distributed systems.
Outside of work, Richard is an avid long-distance runner, and big fan of playing and watching football (only Manchester United).
Malcolm McKee

Biography
Malcolm directly manages the Enterprise Architecture practice and provides architectural leadership for a community of more than 80 architects across the enterprise. Before his current role, Malcolm has had a varied career in IT as a Programme Manager, Consultant, and Portfolio Manager.
He graduated from the University of Surrey in 1998 (BSC Hons. Computing and Information Technology). He also has an MBA from Kingston University (2005). He has guest lectured on undergraduate and postgraduate modules in the Department of Computing since 2005, and was previously a Senior Visiting Fellow in the Department.

Ahad Nujurally
Deputy Chief Technical Architect, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy
Biography
Ahad Nujurally joined central government in 1989 whilst studying part time for a degree in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Westminster. Since graduating, Ahad has held a variety of IT roles and has gained a vast amount of experience collaborating with universities and businesses on technical issues via KTN networks and the Technology Strategy Board.
For the past seven years, Ahad has also been responsible for the recruitment and training of undergraduate placement students – the majority of which have been recruited from the University of Surrey. Outside of work Ahad is a keen fencer in both foil and epée weapons and takes a keen interest in science and environmental issues. He is also a STEM Ambassador, promoting and teaching science & technology to children in the Greater London area.
Andy Osborne

Biography
Andy started his career as an engineer in the Aerospace industry, before joining what was then a medium-sized software house, Admiral Computing, in 1989. He has stayed with that organisation through a number of mergers and acquisitions to its present status as CGI for nearly 30 years. During that time he has fulfilled roles in development, team leading, architecture, business analysis, technical and business consulting, business development and management. Currently he is responsible for a number of accounts, projects and opportunities in Central Government. He is passionate about solving problems with Information Technology and helping young people develop rewarding careers.
He is married with three children, two of whom are already at University, with the youngest studying for her GCSEs. Outside of work he spends much of his time outside following his hobbies of triathlon, skiing and golf.
Tony Phipps

Biography
Tony Phipps started his career as an engineer and has worked in a variety of fields including construction, electrical and electronic engineering and more recently, information technology. For the last 20 years he has specialised in Information and Physical Security. He obtained my first degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Greenwich in 1997 and a masters degree from University of Westminster in Information Technology Security in 2002. He is currently responsible for a small team that manages cyber security research for one of Europe's largest Digital banks.
Neil Simpson
Delivery Manager, Operational Decision Management (Development), IBM UK LTD
Biography
Neil Simpson graduated from the University of Surrey in 1995 having completed his degree in Computing & Information Technology. Having spent his placement year at the IBM UK Scientific Centre, Neil returned to IBM as a graduate programmer working at IBM's Development Laboratory in Hursley, Hampshire.
Two years later, Neil was seconded to the Human Resources department undertaking a number of roles including Human Resources Adviser and Hursley Recruitment Officer. Following a spell working in Paris as the Workforce Manager for Sales and Distribution for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Neil returned to the Laboratory and to software development management.
His current role is Delivery Manager for WebSphere Business Events & ILOG Business Rules Synergies Development. Neil started on the Industrial Advisory Board a long time ago as a Graduate representative and has been involved ever since. Outside of work, Neil enjoys long distance running, SCUBA diving and is qualified as a Rescue Diver.

Adrian joined Thales UK Research & Technology (then Racal Research) in 1997. He is a Technical Consultant responsible for providing cryptography and information security expertise on many projects.
His current interests include multi-level security, identity management, policy based management and security for system-of-systems. Adrian qualified as a CISSP in 2003.
Alan Woodward

Biography
Alan began as a physicist, however, he developed an interest in computing early on through signal processing for gamma ray burst detectors, and so switched to engineering after his BSc.
His post graduate research at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR), University of Southampton, was in adaptive filtering, and novel methods of recovering corrupted signals.
After leaving the ISVR Alan worked for the UK government for many years. He has particular expertise in, and continues to conduct research into, cyber security, covert communications, forensic computing and image/signal processing. Alan has been involved in some of the most significant advances in computer technology which have seen him elected as a Fellow and chartered member of the British Computer Society, Institute of Physics and the Royal Statistical Society.
