About
My research project
Path Planning for Lunar ConstructionThe field of space travel is growing tremendously, reflecting the growing interest towards exploring the solar system. The Moon is the closest extra-terrestrial body; and thus, serves as a prime testbed for future technologies to colonise the Moon as well as prepare humanity for inter-planetary space colonisation.
To set up a habitat on the Moon, there has been increasing interest towards using in-situ resources (such as lunar surface soil) to construct habitats and infrastructure; reducing the requirement for large payloads to be brought from Earth. Effectively, reducing transport cost and energy requirements. One of the most promising approaches for in-situ construction is 3D printing of lunar materials.
My project with Dr Sungwoo Lim is focused on the path-planning element of 3D printing, i.e. the determination of the ideal 3D printer tool head movement and processing parameters to improve structural properties, surface finish and construction efficiency. This is crucial for extra-terrestrial construction, due to the highly brittle nature of 3D printed lunar material, as well as the hostile lunar environment.
