About

Biography

Amita is a creative writer and dance academic. She studies how dance and movement produce gender and disrupt gender ideologies. She is especially interested in the intersections of gender with other markers of identity like race, nationality, site, and especially nomadic identification. Creative writing, including fiction, performative and evocative writing, inform the way she writes and thinks about the moving body.

In 2015, she was a Leverhulme Artist-in-Residence at University College London, and looked at how creative writing produces place and how bodies navigate site and memory to confront questions of identity and belonging.

Amita is a kathak and yoga practitioner. Her academic writing and reviews can be found in New Theatre Quarterly, South Asian Popular Culture, Media/Culture, Body and Society, PAJ and others, and creative writing in literary magazines like Sand, Brand, J-Journal: New Writings on Justice, Berkeley Fiction Review and others. She completed her PhD in Dance Studies at the University of California, Riverside.
