Which criminology degree is right for you?

You’d like to do an undergraduate degree in criminology? You’re in the right place! Here at Surrey, we offer five pathways to study criminology. Let us take you through the differences between our courses so you know what makes each of them special. Criminology BSc

This research-led course will help you develop a critical perspective on contemporary problems relating to crime, deviance and social control, teaching you the methods necessary to conduct and evaluate research in these areas. Our Criminology BSc gives you the knowledge and analytical skills you need to pursue a professional career in criminal justice, the public sector, policy development or research, or as a launchpad for further training to work in specialist areas such as forensic science or counselling.

Criminology and Psychology BSc

On this new degree, you’ll delve into why offenders commit crime, the consequences of their actions, and explore how rehabilitation can help. By studying these complementary subjects, you’ll lay a foundation for a successful career as a criminal justice professional, in clinical roles in offender management and rehabilitation, or supporting victims of crime. Course content is split between criminology and psychology modules to give you a solid foundation in both disciplines.

Criminology and Sociology BSc

Studying criminology and sociology together will give you vital insights into the world of crime as well as how human relationships and society influence our behaviour. Our course prepares you for fields that involve investigative skills and working in diverse fields such as journalism, politics, marketing, human resources or public administration, as well as for in positions in the criminal justice system, social service and government.

Criminology with Forensic Investigation BSc

On this course you will explore the causes of criminal behaviour, the principles of the criminal justice system, and the key elements of crime scene investigation. Using our new forensic flat, you'll get hands-on experience to learn about crime scene methods and analysing how you can apply them in a controlled environment. You'll develop wide range of investigative, practical, and communication skills that are attractive to employers, including within policing and the criminal justice system.

Law with Criminology LLB

Our LLB (Hons) Law with Criminology course will equip you with the skills and knowledge you need to proceed to professional legal qualifications as a solicitor or barrister and to engage critically with the principles of law. You will also gain an awareness of current issues in criminology – from debates surrounding criminal justice, to social control and the role of the police.

What do they have in common?

  • What is criminal behaviour? What motivates offenders? How does crime impact victims, and which punishments should be imposed on criminals? These are some of the questions you’ll explore on all our criminology courses.
  • Study at Surrey and you’ll investigate the cause and effect of criminal actions, the form and outcome of social disorders, the policing and regulation of public disorder, the criminal justice system, and the relationship between behaviours and punishments.
